The US government has added a page for ‘the use of marijuana and cannabinoids’ on their official cancer website. The National Cancer Institute, part of the United States Department of Health, now suggests that ‘cannabinoids may be useful in treating side effects of cancer and cancer treatment’ by smoking marijuana and eating cannabis-based food products, drinking herbal tea or even spraying cannabinoids under the tongue. The site also lists of marijuana uses for other diseases, including anti-inflammatory activity, preventing the growth of blood vessels that supply tumors, blocking cell growth, antiviral activity and eliminating muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis. The information page also explains how cancer cells in mice died when exposed to marijuana.
Another study found that many cancer cells die when exposed to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is a psychoactive substance in marijuana. Other experts also say that cannabinoids contained in marijuana besides functioning to treat cancer symptoms such as nausea, pain, loss of appetite, and fatigue also have anti-tumor properties.
Besides being able to kill cancer cells directly, THC can also reduce the ability to spread cancer cells. Another advantage of THC is that THC is capable of killing cancer cells without killing normal cells.
Various types of cancer have been shown to improve after exposure to THC, ranging from brain cancer (glioma), lung cancer, blood cancer (leukemia), and breast cancer. In brain cancer, THC has been shown to kill cancer cells and inhibit the formation of new blood vessels. In lung cancer, THC has been shown to inhibit the spread of cancer. In leukemia, THC causes cancer cell death (apoptosis). In breast cancer, THC has been shown to inhibit proliferation, metastasis, and cancer cell growth.
Today many researchers are trying to use THC and cannabinoid as a combination therapy in chemotherapy drugs that can kill cancer cells and do not participate in killing healthy cells so that various side effects of chemotherapy drugs can be reduced.
